Update - Andrian - May 18, 2008
Updated to version 1.1:
- ability to change background and foreground color
- added small border on the edges of the editor
- added ability to delete revisions
- fixed IE issue with "Navigate away" confirmation
Suggestions - Grant - May 19, 2008
I have a couple of suggestions.
First, it would be very helpful if their was a full screen mode to minimize distractions that would hide the top bar.
Second, it would be great if their was a "view as html" button that would load your file as an html document in your browser to make coding more efficient.

Change help for about - Ian - June 03, 2008
Right now the link reads help (new version) , which makes me think that there is something wrong with the new version. It also insinuates that help is desirable when trying to operate the application. If this is so, which i find very unlikely considering the simplicity of it, help is not even provided. I therefore suggest you change the name from help to about.
Update 1.2 - Andrian - June 05, 2008

Thank you, lord, for having mercy on my text-editor-obsessed soul. I already use google for everything, and I've tried tons of different apps for my ever-present "random stuff" notepad with no success. Regular text-editors don't save automatically, so I lost data constantly. I tried tomboy notes for a while, but I got distracted by the multiple note features and the fact that I had to have two windows open all the time. You have saved me.

By the way, on your front page where you describe your app, you have a typo in the first paragraph. It says:
What is it?
MyTextFile is ajax-powered online text editor for a single plain text file.
You can use it to store notes, texts snippets or any other information.
It should say, "text snippets." Or maybe, "texts, snippets."

Amazing coincidence.
Please don't change anything, except maybe adding "CTRL-S."
The only thing the site should do is keep text. No conversions, no colors, just keep it like notepad.exe. Thanks so much!
Multiple files and Speller - mllive - Aug. 09, 2008
A good application,
1) There needs to be some way to tie it into a multi file system. Just the capability to get a directory, read from the named file, or write to the named file. Just having a single file is too limiting for me, sorry.
2) I can't spell well enough so that I would find any editor very useful unless there was some spell check and suggestion avaiable.

I found out about this from a blog and immediately downloaded it. I loved it for the first couple days, but since then...the auto-save does not work, nor the save button. Nice but one or two things missing. - object7 - Sept. 12, 2008
I rather like this. Similar to Darkcopy and Writer, but simpler and cleaner. I like the minimal but useful settings, and the maximal amount of room to write provided.

-button for reverting from fullscreen within fullscreen window itself.

Chrome works fine as long as there is existing text - Mark - Oct. 03, 2008
There seems to be a remaining issue with Chrome when there is not existing text. To reproduce: try removing text (be sure that there is no remaining whitespace), save, navigate away from the page and then finally return: mtf_ta is selectable but there is no input cursor in the textarea.
I wouldn't have noticed this if I had not been using Chrome from the beginning :).

Its quick, simple and clean.
I've been using it to store everything from my personal info to todo lists. Just my private notebook in the public web.
Superb!
I've just lately begun using text editors as my primary program for writing, and I love MyTextFile! I changed the background to Black, the foreground to Lime, hit F11 on Firefox, and there you go... clutter-free, toolbar free typing! I do have one request though... any chance you could make it possible to fix the width of the workspace, a la Dark Room? For any largish monitor it gets to be a pretty wide area to read across.
really great app - love being to jot notes and create drafts anywhere!
but could you please include an option to delete old revisions? it's for privacy reasons... i want to have the option to delete the notes instead of having google store my info forever, thanks

This application is really great and I feel immensely grateful to its developer every time I make some good use of it. By the way, I would like to ask for his help with a minor problem that has been nagging at me for a while now --- my Revision History keeps showing two old empty revisions which I simply cannot delete (there is no "delete" button for 0 bytes versions). Any suggestions on how it could be fixed, please? :-)

A suggestion - Jo - Feb. 10, 2010
So, without sounding mindnumbingly oblivious to your goal of a lightweight app, would you consider allowing versions to be tagged or named something. It seems like a small fix, since they're already tagged with dates, but it would effectively allow for an infinite amount of notes/files. Then all you'd have to do is allow search, folders, collaborative editing... ok, ok... just names?
Text for the ultimate portability - hfrazer.nz - March 17, 2010
I have always expounded the virtues of text. Ultimately fast,Ultimately space concious,Ultimately portable. Text will survive generatns of OS's, DocTypes & propriety devices. Cut & paste means you can put it anywhere. I was almost sold on wiki's when my HDD died & I couldn't get my MySQL DB back -now Im back to textdocs. You can type in URL refs & use the Browsers "find" for more complex stuff. Keep It Simple Stupid! (I also use a hipster PDA which fits nicely with this when I print it.)

Its quick, simple and clean. I've been using it to store everything from my personal info to todo lists. Just my private notebook in the public web. Superb!
Great app! Fixed margins, maybe?
- chris.burgwald - Jan. 30, 2009
Suggestion: delete option
- ei.star - Jan. 31, 2009
really great app - love being to jot notes and create drafts anywhere! but could you please include an option to delete old revisions? it's for privacy reasons... i want to have the option to delete the notes instead of having google store my info forever, thanks
Great work

True cross-platform text editor
- jgmarcel - Feb. 25, 2009

Great product! Totally great and simple functionality, better than any alternatives I'm aware of. Hopefully it doesn't go down again!
Help! Where are you?

Yes, my favorite too! And it has disappeared in a puff of nothing! Along with some useful stuff I had saved! :-((( What's happened?
how did you do the string comparision
- sirono - May 20, 2009
i'm impressed by this application, but what i find most interessting, is how do you see that something is deleted? i tested it extensivly, and it never misses a spot. i'm wondering if you would like to share this method...
Quotas
- aforsgren - July 21, 2009
Nice but it's not reliable anymore as it runs out of Google App Engine quotas almost daily now for the last few weeks. Went back to docs for my daily todo lists.
Best thing ever since...BEST THING EVER!!

This is the second version of this comment. The first version was too long to be published. And yet I can't possibly transcribe in words the quality of this application without being insultive. That's how good this app is. So all I'm going to do is say a billion thanks to the author ( a trillion seemed cheesy). Thanks a lot a billion times, and great job!

So, without sounding mindnumbingly oblivious to your goal of a lightweight app, would you consider allowing versions to be tagged or named something. It seems like a small fix, since they're already tagged with dates, but it would effectively allow for an infinite amount of notes/files. Then all you'd have to do is allow search, folders, collaborative editing... ok, ok... just names?
Text for the ultimate portability
- hfrazer.nz - March 17, 2010
I have always expounded the virtues of text. Ultimately fast,Ultimately space concious,Ultimately portable. Text will survive generatns of OS's, DocTypes & propriety devices. Cut & paste means you can put it anywhere. I was almost sold on wiki's when my HDD died & I couldn't get my MySQL DB back -now Im back to textdocs. You can type in URL refs & use the Browsers "find" for more complex stuff. Keep It Simple Stupid! (I also use a hipster PDA which fits nicely with this when I print it.)
great app

thank you for this app, exactly what i was looking for: minimal UI/features for the job, perfect.

as the text size is limited (256k), could you show the current size or some percentage on the page, that would be useful.
Nice app, but is it dead?
- oratek - Aug. 29, 2010
No development in 2 years - a great idea that seems to have died.
This is useful

I have stopped using gedit for storing temporary stuff. I always use mytextfile
